Fisheries Biologist (Tenure-track, Assistant Professor):

The Department of Biology at Central Michigan University seeks an exemplary researcher/teacher to fill a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level in FISHERIES BIOLOGY to begin July 2008. Appointment is normally at the Assistant Professor level, although a more senior appointment is possible for candidates with a strong record of external funding.
Successful candidates will use molecular methods in combination with field approaches to address questions dealing with fish populations such as phylogeography, population structure, or evolutionary characteristics of invading species. Outstanding candidates with research expertise in fisheries genetics and/or the fish communities of the Great Lakes are preferred. Candidates will be expected to utilize the facilities and resources available at the CMU Biological Station on Beaver Island. The CMU Biological Station, located in northern Lake Michigan, has new laboratories, a deep water boat house, and a new academic center. This position is in addition to two recent hires with a focus on Great Lakes research and is augmented by existing departmental strengths in aquatic biology, molecular genetics, systematics, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, biochemistry, wildlife forensics, and conservation biology.

Candidates must have (1) an earned doctorate with training in the biological sciences or a related area and (2) the potential to establish and maintain a vigorous research program that attracts extramural funding. Candidates must (3) have strong potential for outstanding teaching, (4) mentor graduate and undergraduate students, (4) possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and (5) present a positive attitude of collaboration. Post-doctoral experience preferred.

Teaching responsibilities include upper-level courses in the area of specialty, and contributions to introductory courses and the conservation biology program.
